Starting the year off on the right note is a great way to help your student continue on a successful path for the entire school year. As your child enters or prepares to return to Reeths-Puffer High School, here are a few tips for making sure the year gets off to a good start:
- Encourage your child to attend classes regularly and arrive on time – these are life skills that are important after high school
- Pick a regular homework time and space that helps your student focus on their learning
- Read – Students should spend time reading every day
- Encourage your student to get involved - students who are involved in clubs and activities outside of class do much better than students who do not get involved
- Stay in contact with teachers, and take advantage of opportunities to communicate when questions come up. Staff are available by phone, and e-mail during the day.
- Ask questions – staff are willing to share their knowledge and experiences with you to find the right path for your student. Here are a few suggestions:
Is my child reading at grade level?
Can you show me books that are in the right difficulty level? Can you recommend books he/she might like?
How is my student doing in math?
Are there areas that need improvement? How can I best help my child at home?
What are the requirements for doing well in your class? Can you show me examples of high quality student work?
How much time should my student spend on homework?
Other than grade reports, what are the best ways to keep up to date with my student’s progress?
What support is available for students who may struggle?
Wishing you and your students a great start to the 2010-2011 School year!
