Come Skate With Our Varsity Hockey Team!

This has become a GREAT annual event for our community!  Coach Sikkenga and his varsity hockey team will host a public skate on Wednesday, December 21st at 4:15 at Lakeshore Ice Arena.  The cost is $3.00 with skate rental available for an additional $2.00.

The hockey players are a great help to the beginning skaters and are more than willing to offer tips for the more advanced skaters.

If  you haven’t been on skates in a long time, Wednesday, Dec. 21st is the perfect time to lace a pair on!  It’s a guaranteed wonderful time!

Lexile Measures Improving at R-PHS

As you read the title of this post, you might wonder what exactly is a Lexile measure.  I can help with this!

The Purpose of Lexile Measurements are:

  • To assess the reading difficulty of texts
  • To assess student’s ranges of reading comprehension
  • To predict how well a student is likely to comprehend a particular text

If a student’s Lexile score and a textbook’s Lexile are the same (or very close to the same), you can expect the student to read and comprehend 75% of the material presented.

What is a Lexile and how is it determined?

A Lexile measure is an indicator of how difficult a text is to comprehend based upon:

  • Word Frequency (not frequency in passage but in English language)
  • Sentence length (best predictor of the difficulty of a sentence is its length)

What doesn’t a Lexile measure?

  • Content
  • Quality
  • Complexity (syntax, irony, symbolism, etc.)
  • Jargon
  • Interest
  • Design

What comprehension skills are tested?

  • Paraphrase information in passage
  • Drawing conclusions from a passage
  • Making inferences
  • Identifying supporting details
  • Making generalizations from passage

The data for the class of 2015, 2014, 2013 are presented in the links below:

9th Grade Proficiency Summary Report

10th Grade Proficiencey Summary Report

11th Grade Proficiencey Summary Report

A quick synopsis of the data informs us that 71% of our students assessed in these cohorts are reading at the proficient of advanced levels based on the Lexile measure.  The chart below will provide you with information on the percentile rank of readers by Lexile measure:

Lexile Percentile Table

As we move to the Common Core State Standards, the current Lexile ranges (also called bands) will be “stretched” to align with the associated rigor increases.   Grades 9 & 10 have been linked as seen below:

Current Proficiency Lexile Band                                    “Stretch” Lexile Band

9th & 10th:  960-1115                                                          9th & 10th: 1080 – 1305

11th: 1070 – 1220                                                                  11th: 1215 – 1355

The Common Core Standards advocate a “staircase” of increasing text complexity, beginning in grade 2, so that students can develop their reading skills and apply them to more difficult texts.  At the lowest grade in each band, students focus on reading texts within that text complexity band.  In the subsequent grade or grades within a band, students must “stretch” to read a certain proportion of texts from the next higher text complexity band.  This pattern repeats itself throughout the grades so that students can both build on earlier literacy gains and challenge themselves with texts at a higher complexity level.

R-PHS sent four students to the annual Baker College competition for Computer Aided Design (CAD) earlier this week and our students represented our high school very well.

Representing R-PHS were:  Tyler Brown, Kenny Kibbey, Clark Nelson and Justin West.

There are three divisions that students could compete in:  Drafting & Design (board drafting), AutoCad & 3D Modeling.

Tyler Brown took first place in the AutoCad division and second in the 3D Modeling division.  Clark Nelson took third place in the 3D Modeling division.

Christmas Dance

The senior class staged a successful dance for many students this past Saturday night.  It was nice to see a lot of parents who gave of their time to check coats, provide refreshments, assist with escorts and take tickets.  Many hands made light work.

A few photos from the night are presented below along with a short video of students having fun!

What’s Your Extra?

It’s exciting to see the new clubs and groups that are forming on campus this semester!  More students are finding a connection to school outside of their class load.  Research informs us that the more involved a student is with their school, the better they perform on their school work.

Mr. Schlaff, counselor at R-PHS does a very nice job in capturing “What’s Your Extra?” in video format that’s presented to our students.  The videos, part I & II are posted below:

If you’re a student reading this post, and you’re not currently involved in an “Extra”, now’s the time to get involved!

Nuveen Center for the Arts Presents: Ecosystem

An ecosystem is the relationship between plants, animals and the habitats in which they live.  It’s from this definition that our students were given the artistic challenge to craft organisms from the fish and reptile families as representatives of predators in an ecosystem unique to the environment we live in.  Mrs. Harris and Mr. Hellmann guided our students along this artistic path as their students put their own artistic spin on their project.

An exhibition of our students work will be available for community view from December 1st through January 14th at the Nuveen Center for the Arts in downtown Montague.  The program listing our students can be accessed from the link below:

Some of the artwork is presented in picture form below so you may see the talents of our art students.

I Am A Tim Timbow Fan!

I am a Tim Tebow fan!

If you don’t know who Tim Tebow is, I’ll catch you up to speed in a few sentences.  Tim was a high school All-American at Nease High School in St. Augustine, Florida.  He became a two-time All-American at the University of Florida where he won two national championships and the coveted Heisman Trophy, an annual award given to the best college football player in the country.  He currently plays quarterback for the Denver Broncos in the NFL.

It seems as though there are numerous people who’ve jumped on the anti-Tebow bus, saying he doesn’t have the talent to be on an NFL roster let alone being tabbed the starting quarterback for the Broncos.  As I write this post, the Tebow-led Broncos are 6-1 with Tim as their starting signal-caller.

If you enjoy reading about publicity stunts, nightclub incidents, dog-fighting hobbies or the soap opera that is Brett Favre, don’t click on an article about Tim Tebow.  If you follow twitter, Tim won’t be “trending” anytime soon.

Tim Tebow is a young man of whom we can all be proud.  He is clean-cut, articulate, humble, gracious in victory, hard-working, and, if that weren’t enough, he’s a humanitarian.  He’s not the kind of humanitarian that gives in the public eye, but a humanitarian who gives quietly in the orphanages of the Philippines.

The football critics, and there are many, say Tebow lacks accuracy, experience and football I.Q.  The offense he’s best suited for will never work in the NFL; he can’t adapt to the professional game.  It seems as though the commentators and other critics who have been given microphones and  a panel of like-minded analysts are waiting for the “other” shoe to drop.

Jake Plummer, the latest to take pot shots at the embattled Denver quarterback, might have been speaking for the “anti-Tebow nation” when he said in a recent interview on a Phoenix radio station that he would like Tebow more if he would “shut-up” about his faith in Jesus Christ.  It seems that this statement let, the cat, as they say, out of the bag.

Did Plummer say what the commentators dared not to say when the national spotlight was shining brightly on their face in homes across America?  Is their dislike for Tim Tebow more about his faith than his throwing motion?  As a society, do we really want heroes who are truly good? Or, do we want them to fail a drug test or start a bar fight?  Does it make us feel better about ourselves?  Tim Tebow however, doesn’t make us feel better about ourselves.  People like him make us feel a little convicted about the things we say and do.  So we find a reason to dislike him.  Or, when Tebow says that the glory goes to God and the credit for a victory goes to his teammates, coaches and family, we are suspicious.  It would seem that we live in an ever-increasingly jaded culture, we don’t believe that anyone can say such things and really mean them.

I will continue to cheer for Tim Tebow!  I respect the way he plays the game of football and for the stand he makes in the game of life.  His story is played out in his actions and deeds, not tattooed somewhere on his body.

Rocket Scholars Foundation Raffle

Most of the high schools in our county have endowments set up through the Muskegon Community Foundation.  These endowments are set up with the hope of growing and continuing to provide more and more kids financial assistance for post secondary education.  Four years ago, a very passionate group of community members set up the “Rocket Scholars Foundation” through the Community Foundation to support Reeths-Puffer students and graduates.

On January 19th at the Hilt Building, the Rocket Scholars will host a very fun “fund-raiser”.  Light hors d’oeuvres will be served and entertainment will be provided.  They will also be engaging in a “reverse” raffle with the top prize being $10,000.  Only 350 tickets are being sold to keep the odds strong.

Tickets are $100.  Tickets include the evening and the drawing.

Possible Reasons or Ideas to Purchase:

  • To support RP Graduates with scholarship money
  • Odds of winning are good (1/350)
  • Stocking stuffers or Christmas gift
  • Anniversaries
  • Birthdays
  • You get a night out, contribute to R-P kids, and you get much better odds than in a lottery.
  • Families or co-workers could split the cost of a ticket (1-ticket allows two people into the event)

*In the event that we sell less than 200 tickets the raffle will become a 50/50 drawing.

**There is also an option as the drawing comes to an end, that remaining present ticket holders could split the money, e.g. if the last five (5) ticket holders are present and agree to split the money, each would receive 1/5 or $2000.00 (all must agree).

***The Rocket Scholars Foundation is conducting various fundraisers throughout the year to begin supporting 2011-12 graduates.  They are currently looking at reimbursement to seniors who take and “pass” AP exams and providing several additional scholarships.

If you would like to purchase a ticket, I can assist you!  Please contact my office at: 719-3107 and I will be glad to sell you a ticket to this grand event!

Annual Turkey Run Serves 2000!

Filed under: Archive,Community News,Parents,School Board,Staff,Students,Uncategorized — Mr. Beckeman @ 9:14 pm

The annual partnership with the Salvation Army and R-P was another great success as over 2,000 dinners were prepared and delivered throughout the greater Muskegon area on Thanksgiving morning.

Our R-P Turkey Run MVP’s are Jean Lemieux, Connie Falbe and Donna Durda, who spend countless hours after work cooking the turkeys, staging the food and equipment for the numerous volunteers who come to assist in preparing the meals.  Without their help, this event would be very difficult to pull off.  Many thanks to our super 3!

We were fortunate to have over 80 students volunteer after school to prepare the green beans, gravy, cranberry, bags, turkey, and serving lines.  The photos below show some of our helpers as they prepare the meals for Thanksgiving day.

We’re proud to partner with the greater Muskegon Salvation Army every year.  If the need still exists next November, you can bet that the mighty Rockets will be up for the challenge!
