An activity that has become tradition at R-PHS is a gathering of seniors for a final countdown to the end of their high school career that results in a “tossing of the notes” celebration.

The Pride Day 2010 honoree, chosen by student council was Mr. Charles Hodson, director of bands for R-PHS. Mr. Hodson’s twenty year career as leader of our Rocket Instrumental Music program made for an easy choice for student council. Under Mr. Hodson’s leadership, our marching band has won eight state championships and one national championship. The wind ensembles consistently earn top ratings in MSBA competitions year in and year out and the jazz band is second to none!
The student council staged the best Pride Day in recent memory. The students enjoyed a hearty lunch served by staff and then were off to participate in games and activities such as: bull riding, ultimate frisbee, home run derby, basketball, soccer, chalk art, volleyball, floor hockey, kickball, starcraft, dunk tank, moon walk, obstacle course, tennis, guitar hero, karaoke, softball, flag football, open weightlifting, car show, sodoku, horse riding and listening to a rock band.
Many thanks go to Mr. Marshall, Mr. Hankinson and the student council members that were responsible for organizing the events and activities for the day. It was surely a day to remember!

R-PHS now boasts five former students who have gone on to win a national championship at the college level! Our first national champion was Mark Hughes, a 1989 national champion for the University of Michigan’s basketball team.
We now add Abby Collinge, Olivia Morey, Kaia Swain and Nicole Suchy to our growing list of national champions who recently won the national championship in softball as members of Muskegon Community College’s women’s team.
Olivia was injured during the regular season and was unable to compete in the national tournament but was a valued member of the team and a national champion nonetheless. Kaia was listed as a red-shirt member of the team.

Abby played third base all season and Nicole was DH and catcher for the Jayhawks. Their team went on to beat top ranked Kankakee Community College in the championship game by the score of 2-0.
Their best memory of the season came at the end when they received a police escort into town to be greeted by family and friends. Both girls had great things to say about their team, especially their coach, Matt Houseman. Abby remarked, “Coach gets more out of you than you think you have inside you.” Nicole, who stated that he’s an “in-your-face” type coach is also the most loving coach a player could hope for.
I asked each former Rocket star to share a quote about their great ride to a school record 59-9 season, here’s what they had to share:
“Softball is more than just a sport to me, it’s a way of life. It has taught me how to be a young woman. My faith has grown and I have learned all I need to know.” – Abby
“You learn so much from one another, you become a family and you mature into young women through this simple game. You win and lose together and that’s what playing sports is all about.” – Nicole
On May 13th, the district’s Internal Peer Review Team paid a visit to the high school focusing their attention on the high school’s improvement efforts in the seven standards of school improvement as identified by North Central Accreditation (NCA). The seven standards are:

For our senior theatre students, this event marks the last time they will perform on our Rocket Centre stage. We have many, many talented students at R-PHS and our senior class seems to be loaded with talent.
In this production, the seniors take care of all aspects of the show. From selecting the scenes, finding costumes, lighting, sound, stage coordination, makeup and set design, it is their show. They have a lot of popular scenes for your enjoyment. The show is appropriate for middle school age and older.

For any student planning on participating in sports or marching band for the 2010-11 school year, you’ll want to circle May 26th from 3:30 – 6:00 p.m. on your calendar to come to R-PHS to get your school physical in the arena.
In order to get a physical, a completely filled out physical card (including parent signature) must be presented at the time of the physical. Physical forms are available in the school’s offices and will be available on the day of the physicals by the arena.
The cost of the physical is $20.00. Checks should be payable to R-PHS Athletics. There will be three doctors and two nurses from Bear Creek Health Center on hand to manage physicals.
Heads were turning at the recent track regionals held at Houseman Field in Grand Rapids as the duo of Allix Miller and Christy Schultz burned up the track in route to three regional championships and two new school records.
Junior Allix Miller won the 200 m race with the time of 25.5 seconds and broke the R-PHS school record in the 400 m race with a time of 58.6.
Freshman Christy Schultz won two regional championships in the 100 m race with a time of 12.2 and a new school record in the long jump with a leap of 18′ 1 1/4 “.
The girls now move on to Rockford High School on June 5th to compete in the state track championships. There’s a good chance that new records might be broken as these girls are both talented and determined!
The R-PHS girls soccer team traded in their green and white uniforms for pink ones last Friday night to support cancer awareness and went on to defeat the Norsemen from North Muskegon.
Senior Emily Swain was instrumental in organizing this event which was our second annual benefit in the fight against cancer.
The varsity game was really never a contest as our girls easily won the game by the score of 6-0. In this game, there really wasn’t a loser as North Muskegon also helped to raise funds for the cancer research.

R-PHS students Courtney and Alivia Blair have great reason to be proud of their mother! Mrs. Cyndi Blair, current nursing supervisor for Muskegon County Community Mental Health and proud mother of two current R-P students is the major force behind the regionally successful “No More Sideline” organization.
“No More Sidelines” is an organization where special needs students gather from the greater West Michigan area to forge new friendships, play in games, go to dances and enjoy many other activities that other kids enjoy doing.
Many R-P students benefit from “No More Sidelines” through extended friendships, community activities and sporting events all made possible by a handful of committed volunteers under the guidance of Mrs. Blair.

Our community is fortunate to have R-P parents; Cyndi Blair, Shari Forner and Mark Lewis helping to provide memorable opportunities for the kids that make up “No More Sidelines”.
The Motown sound came alive in the Rocket Centre last night as our Choirs sang and danced to some of the greatest Motown hits of the sixties. Mrs. Schlaff and R-P Alum, Corbin Mulder have put together a great night of entertainment for the whole family. The students will perform again Friday night at 7:00 p.m. There will be a special ice cream treat following the performance for only $1.50.
