R-P Hosts State Band Festival

Filed under: Archive,Community News,Parents,School Board,Staff,Students — Mr. Beckeman @ 2:25 pm

R-PHS has been the site of choice to host the State Band Festival this week Wednesday through Friday.

Mr. Chuck Hodson, R-PHS band director shared his excitement with me about the rave reviews the Wind Ensemble received from the panel of judges.  His comment:

“The performance of the Wind Ensemble was superb, probably one of the finest that we’ve had in my 20 year tenure at Reeths-Puffer High School.  You know it was something special when the judges gave the band a standing ovation!”

The scores that came back were the highest one of his bands have ever received.  The grade charts were combined for you to access from the link below:

Chalk up another great story for the fine arts department at R-PHS!

Grant Program Offers Scholarships

R-PHS alum and coordinator of the 21st CCLC Grant for R-PHS, Mr. Jerry Wallace has just informed us that students participating in the after school grant program will be eligible for “scholarships” to help cover the cost of any credit recovery they would look to complete through our partnership with White Lake Area Community Education.

There will be a summer session for the after school program that would allow students to qualify for this scholarship.  Mr. Wallace will have packets available for participating students next week and anyone interested can stop by his office (located next to mine) to learn more about this opportunity.

Cost to students: $50 per 1/2 credit.  Any student who earns a “C” or better will get $25.00 back.  That’s $25.00 for 1/2 credit!

Seniors Choose Honor Guards

Filed under: Archive,Community News,Parents,School Board,Staff,Students,Uncategorized — Mr. Beckeman @ 6:36 am

Honor Guards have been chosen for this year’s graduation.  Leading in the procession of the class of 2010 for the graduation ceremony will be juniors Bethany Roesler and Eric Hester.

Honor Gurards

Bethany is active in a number of school activities including STATS (Straight Talk About Tough Stuff), National Honor Society, Wind Ensemble, Marching Band, and Lighthouse Writers’ Club. She will be involved in Madrigals and Children’s Theatre in her senior year.  She is also very involved with her church youth group and church youth band.  She is part of a Kenya Mission team at her church and will volunteer with students working in ministry at Portage Lake Covenant Bible Camp this summer.

Eric is equally involved in high school as part of the Madrigals, Wind Ensemble, Marching Band, Jazz Band, and National Honor Society.  He has also been active with the Reeths-Puffer Musicals.  In addition, Eric is part of the Destination ImagiNation team which took first place in the State Competition.  He and his team will move on to represent Reeths-Puffer High School in the National Competition in May.  Eric is also involved in theatrical productions at the Nuveen Center.

The high school is truly proud of the honor guards who represent the class of 2011.

DI Team Wins State Championship!

Filed under: Archive,Community News,Parents,School Board,Staff,Students,Uncategorized — Mr. Beckeman @ 8:17 am

The R-PHS DI (Destination Imagination) team competed in the State Finals last Saturday at Holt High School and capture the state title in the “DO or DI” category.  The four-student team of Alex Griffin, Eric Hester, Jenna Holmes and Emily Kaulius have been researching things that are going or have gone extinct.  At the competition, they draw a topic of something extinct (they drew the pitcher plant) and a central character (they drew an arrogant person) and then get five minutes to plan out their skit to determine whether or not they will save what is extinct or let it die.  During their presentation they also have to open a card that contains an unimportant superpower that they have to incorporate on the spot (their superpower was gaining knowledge from a rubber duckie).  Their skit earned them a perfect score of 300.

A few quotes from the team:

“We’ve all worked really hard to get to Global Finals.  At this point, it’s not so much about the competition as it is to just have fun.” – Jenna Holmes

“I’ve been in DI for ten years and this is the first year we’ve made it to Globals.  Our hard work paid off and it feels truly amazing.” – Emily Kaulius

The team has begun to raise funds so they can make the trip to Knoxville, Tennessee a reality in late May.  If you would like to make a contribution towards this effort, please contact me at the high school (231-744-1647 ext. 3700).

Three Seniors Awarded Scholarships

Filed under: Archive,Community News,Parents,School Board,Staff,Students — Mr. Beckeman @ 3:06 pm

Three members of the class of 2010 were recently awarded a $500 scholarship to be used for college tuition from the Osteopathic Foundation of West Michigan.

Seniors Nathan Elliott, Rebecca Hutchins and Kristine Stewart took part in the OsteoCHAMPS program on the campus of Michigan State University over the summer and their participation and performance earned them this noteworthy scholarship.

A little about each scholarship award winner’s plans for their future:

Kristine Stewart:

“I plan on attending Muskegon Community College to get my basics take care of for two years.  Afterwards, I intend to go to Grand Valley State University with hopes to engage in their very competitive Physician’s Assistant Program.  OsetoCHAMPS truly opened up several doors and provided me with great insight into the medical world.  It was an experience I will always remember and highly recommend to the curious juniors or seniors who would like to get a taste of what the field of medicine entails.”

Nathan Elliott:

“I have decided to attend Michigan State University after visiting the campus during my two week stay in OsteoCHAMPS.  I fell in love with the campus and immediately felt at home.  I am excited to join in MSU’s pre-med program in the fall and am looking forward to being a Spartan!”

Rebecca Hutchins:

After high school, I plan on attending Michigan State University to study pre-med.  I am determined to receive my Master’s degree to pursue a career in medicine, hopefully, to become a Physician’s Assistant specializing in surgery.  Without OsteoCHAMPS by my side, I don’t believe my interest in medicine would have grown and without a doubt, I would not have been blessed with all of the many opportunities.  OsteoCHAMPS is truly an amazing program which I am very thankful and honored to be a part of.  Go Spartans!”

The OsteoCHAMPS organization provides our students with great opportunities to engage in the field of medicine.  To learn more about OsteoCHAMPS, visit their website at: www.osteopathicfoundation.org.
