Filed under: Archive,Community News,Parents,School Board,Staff,Students,Uncategorized — Mr. Beckeman @ 2:59 pm

R-PHS was the host for this year’s No More Sidelines valentine’s dance this past Saturday night.  R-P parent, Mrs. Cyndi Blair, is co-founder of No More Sidelines, a nonprofit organization that provides children and young adults with special needs an opportunity to participate in events that all kids should have access to.

Nearly 200 people enjoyed a catered dinner, received free photographs, prizes and of course danced the wax off the floor.  A few photos of the evening are presented below:

R-P’s own Mark Grimmette, class of 1989, was named as our country’s flag bearer for the winter olympics 2010.  Needless to say that the entire R-P community is very proud of Mark’s accomplishments and wish him the very best as he competes for the only medal that’s missing in his drawer, the GOLD!

I’ve linked Wood TV 8′s site where you can read an article on Mark and view an interview of Mark by sports news anchor, Jack Doles.

Parent Internet Viewer

Parent Internet Viewer (PIV) is a great tool that can be accessed by parents to monitor the performance of their student.  PIV allows the tracking of grades, attendance and assignments with the hope of strengthening communication between parents, their student and our school.

PIV has an email feature that provides parents with access of the listed items above through an automated email notice that is easy to set up.  If you’re interested, follow the directions listed below:

Visit the high school webpage (same page as this blog!)

Scroll down on the right-hand column and click on Parent Internet Viewer

The “Username” is your student’s student ID number (6 digits)

The “Password” is your student’s birthday (6 digits with no dashes)

Click on the “Login” box

On the left-hand column, click on the “email notifications” link listed under options

Type in the email address you would like the notifications sent to (click “continue”)

The middle set of choices just need your “click” in the box next to each potential notification.  You then get to choose when and how often you would like the checked notifications.  It also provides you notification when your student receives a grade less than the percentage you assign.

Once you’ve made your choices, simply click on “submit notification request” .  That’s it!

I hope this tool assists you in maintaining or improving the communication between you, your student and R-PHS.  Please let me know if you have any difficulty with accessing this tool.  I will be happy to assist you in any way I can.

Special Kids + Special Kids = Special Memories!

Filed under: Archive,Community News,Parents,School Board,Staff,Students — Mr. Beckeman @ 7:47 am

Last week Thursday, our hockey team partnered with Mrs. Wise’s class to provide an experience that would last a lifetime for all students involved.  Mrs. Wise’s teaches special needs kids and Mr. Sikkenga’s hockey players are kids with special talents.  When these two groups of R-P kids converged on the ice at Lakeshore Sports Center, special bonds and memories were formed.  A few photos and quotes are provided below from this event:

“It started with riding the bus with the hockey team, who all looked very official wearing their R-P warm-ups.  We were given a tour of their locker room, of the ice arena and then were given hockey skates.  That’s when the magic began!”  (Mrs. Rhonda Malotke, Parapro at R-PHS)

“Our hockey team is a group of kind, compassionate and awesome young men.  What we witnessed brought tears to our eyes.  Some students were skating on their own next to players.  Others were being encouraged to try by the players, and then there were students being pushed around in chairs on the ice.  There were smiles on every face.” (Mrs. Carol Taylor, Parapro at R-PHS)

“The open skate with Mrs. Wise’s class was one of the best experiences that I have ever had.  I wouldn’t trade it for anything.  It was priceless to see the joy they had on their faces.”  (Senior Joey Sterrit, R-PHS Hockey Player)

A big thanks goes out to Mrs. Wise and Mr. Sikkenga for organizing this great event on behalf of R-P kids!

No More Sidelines Hoops It Up With R-P!

Last night in Rocket Arena, the varsity boys and girls teams coached and played along side of over 40 special needs kids that are part of No More Sidelines (NMS).  NMS was organized by R-P parent and supporter; Mrs. Cyndi Blair, to provide opportunities for special needs students that, under most circumstances, would not have the opportunity with respect to organized athletic competition.

Our high school student athletes assisted the kids with stretches, drills and finally, competitive and fun games.   They really enjoyed their time spent with the kids realizing they have a lot to give of themselves for the benefit of others.
