A Strategy for Reading

In an effort to improve student achievement on the Michigan Merit Exam scheduled in March every year for our junior class, our teaching staff at the high school are engaging students using research-based instructional strategies that specifically target reading and writing.

Our focused strategy targeted to improve reading comprehension is Reciprocal Teaching.  This strategy has four components: Predicting, Clarifying, Questioning and Summarizing.  For a more detailed review of each component, click on the link below:

Reciprocal Teaching Components

Reciprocal teaching can be used with any lesson and the components can be used independent of one another by our instructional staff.  Our Reading trend data over three years can be reviewed by clicking on the link below:

Staff have also been receiving inservice on Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI) and student lexil measures.  If you would like to review information on what a lexile measure is, please click on the link below and use the down arrow on the right side of your screen to move to the next slide:

SRI & Lexile Measures

Our plan is to assess our students using the SRI two more times this school year.  The next SRI is planned for late January and the final assessment for the middle of May.  Our hope through the use of effective instructional strategies is to see impactful gains in our students’ lexile measures.
