Lexile Bulletin Boards Getting Face Time

Do you know what your lexile score is?  Wait…do you know what a lexile score measures?

A lexile measure is a score a student receives after engaging in (our case) the Scholastic Reading Inventory.  Once students know what their current lexile measure is, they can see where they “measure” up to the expected lexile measure range set as proficient for their grade level.

The photo below shows students in the sophomore hallway discussing the bulletin board information on student performance on our initial reading inventory taken in early September.

The photo below shows the actual bulletin board that students are viewing:

Our intent with the bulletin boards is to get students talking about their lexile scores.  With this in mind, the instructional staff have been engaging students in two reading strategies (Direct Vocabulary Instruction and Reciprocal Teaching) to improve reading comprehension.

We have two more SRI tests planned for students.  The next SRI will be given in late January (progress monitoring) and the final SRI in May.  We’re hopeful that students will see their lexile scores meet or exceed the proficiency range for their grade.

Energy Cost Conscious

Mr. Andy Hanichen, long time educator for Reeths-Puffer Schools has been, over the past two years,  serving our district as site manager for our Energy Management Program.

With the economy struggling, our district has sharpened the pencil in every area to save dollars for our kids.  The Energy Management Program has been a great asset to our district since September 2005, helping to educate us on ways in which we can save energy costs.

Since September of 2005, our district has been able to avoid costs of $908,765.79!

What does that savings look like at the high school?  The answer is a savings of $123,900.48!  This figure represents a 29.86% savings on what our costs would’ve been if we hadn’t taken advantage of the partnership with our Energy Management Program and the supportive oversite given by Mr. Hanichen.

We are very conscious of turning off lights, closing blinds, alternating when our air handlers, exhaust fans and univents are powered up and down.  The efforts of staff have been tremendous in helping us to conserve energy and save money.

Our goal this year is to improve on our building’s percentage on total energy savings.  The standard is set high but I believe we are up to the task!

OK Conference Votes on Basketball Plan

Filed under: Community News,Parents,Staff,Students — Mr. Beckeman @ 8:34 pm

OK Conference Schools recently voted 49-2 to play Friday night girls’ varsity basketball games first and boys’ varsity games second during the 2009-10 basketball season.  This vote also mandated a switch in the order of when boys and girls games are played to an every other year basis.  This means the order of play for the 2010-11 basketball season will see the boys’ teams play first and the girls play second on Friday nights.

The above decision was rendered as a result of a gender-equity issue raised by the Michigan Gender Equity Team (M Get) to Mr. David Price, gender equity chairperson of the Kent Intermediate School District.  In a letter dated 04/17/09, Tom Wilson, president of M-Get, expressed concerns to Mr. Price regarding some leagues in Michigan who were scheduling girls’ basketball games on Mondays and Thursdays and boys’ games on Tuesdays and Fridays.  With this scheduling scenario, M-Get believes that girls would never have the opportnity to play on prime time dates (Fridays) and thus would be discriminated against under the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, Tile IX Federal Law and the Michigan’s Elliot Larsen Civil Rights Act.

While the written concerns from M-Get are informal in nature, it was felt by the OK Conference that a proactive step must be taken in order to acknowledge their viewpoint of unequal treatment of boys and girls baskeball players, and adjust our league’s basketball schedule to an every other year alternating rotation as described in the first paragraph.

For the record, R-PHS was indeed one of the 49 votes tallied by the conference.

R-P Welcomes Dr. Nesbary Home

Friday, October 16th was resolved through a school proclomation as Dr. Dale K. Nesbary day prior to the start of the varsity football game against Holland High School.  Dr. Nesbary was recently named President of Muskegon Community College after serving as Vice President of Academic Affairs at Albion College.

Dr. Nesbary took time to visit both the middle school and high school during the day and was guest of honor at a reception staged by the band program later in the day.

The real tribute to Dr. Nesbary was giving him the opportunity to direct the best band in the land in the playing of the National Anthem.  Dr. Nesbary (1973 grad) was drum major at R-PHS for three years and an accompished trombone player.

We are very proud of Dr. Nesbary’s appointment at Muskegon Community College and wanted to make his arrival to his Alma Mater one to remember.

The photo below shows Mr. Stephen Cousins, superintendent of schools presenting Dr. Nesbary with a plaque commemorating this day in his honor.  Mr. Mike Weessies, current school board member is also congratualting Dr. Nesbary.

H1N1: Parent Letter

The attached letter will go out soon to all parents of high school students in our district:

High School H1N1 Parent Letter

Are We Pawns?

Filed under: Community News,Parents,Staff — Mr. Beckeman @ 1:45 pm

Michigan Association of Secondary School Principals Executive Director, Mr. Jim Ballard had this to say about the current status of school funding at the state level:

” Schools are being held hostage to the outrageous antics and games with the school budget.  Yesterday the state treasurer sent a memo to Gov. Granholm indicating that the predicted shortfall in the School Aid Fund (SAF) was much larger than expected.  According to the memo, Treasury now estimates that the shortfall will be approximately $264 million for fiscal year 2009-10. ”

“To put that inperspective, that’s an additional $165 per pupil reduction on top of the $165 cut that the legislature passed las week.  Without serious action by the legislature and governor in coming months, schools face total cuts of $330 per pupil.”

“It’s an understatement to say that this is a devastating blow to public education.  The legislature and governor need to quit playing games and finalize a budget so schools can focus on student achievement.  Schools can’t absorb the magnitude of cuts without severe consequences to students.”

“It’s time the legislature gets serious about educating the 1.6 million children in the state of Michigan,” said Kathy Hayes, executive director of the Michigan Association of School Boards.  “With these types of cuts, it’s no longer possible for schools to offer high quality programming.  With the legislature disinvesting in public education, Michigan sends a loud message that our future is no longer important.”

R-P schools have already worked extremely hard to lower our expenses.  Without long-term solutions to our revenue system in Michigan, we risk leaving generations of our students behind.
