Filed under: Community News,Parents,Staff,Students — Mr. Beckeman @ 12:25 pm

The hallways and classrooms throughout the high school took on a ghoulish look as students and staff demonstrated their school spirit by dressing in Halloween costumes.

The creative energy of many students and staff was on display in what was crafted for costuming.  The photos below provide you with a sampling of the school spirit walking our hallways:

Boar’s Head Feast: Everything But A Bore!

Hitting the Rocket Centre stage for the 11th time in the tradition-rich history of our high school, Mrs. Schlaff’s choir program sang, danced, served, joked and thoroughly entertained a sold-out audience for their opening show Thursday night billed as:  “The Haunting of King Henry”.

Assisted by Mrs. Gilson, the student musicians played as the singers from Chorus, Chorale, Vocal Fusion and Madrigals staged skits, led audience participation, sold goodies in the marketplace and made everyone feel as if they were back in medievel times.

The photos below captured some (surely not all!) of the entertainment produced by our talented students (click on photo to enlarge):

The pages below (click to enlarge) shares their homeland, interests, favorite classes and what they miss from home.

Barrett Pays A Visit

Filed under: Community News,Parents,Staff,Students — Mr. Beckeman @ 10:48 am

Officer Eric Rideout and his canine companion, Barrett, made a visit to the high school as a security measure in keeping our campus drug free.  Barrett comes unannounced to all staff and students 3-4 times during the school year and checks lockers and cars for any potential contraband.

The photos below show Officer Rideout with Barrett in action in our freshmen hallway.

Prior to Barrett’s entry into our school, an announcement is made keeping all students in their classrooms until Barrett completes his task.  This way, no students have contact with Barrett.  His visit to our campus was completed in one hour.

The relationship between Officer Rideout and Barrett is quite special as they spend many hours together assisting schools in maintaining a safe and drug free environment for all Muskegon County students.  Many thanks for their support for R-PHS!

A Bull Rider at R-P

Filed under: Community News,Parents,Staff,Students — Mr. Beckeman @ 10:34 am

R-P’s own Jake Fairris is into riding…bull riding that is!  Jake competes in the Michigan High School Rodeo Association (MIHSRA) against other students from school across our state.  Students compete for scholarships towards college and the chance to place in a state competition as well as a national competition.

Jake’s plans with the MIHSRA is to win the state championship and place in the top 15 nationally.  His plans after high school involved moving south and earning his PBR (Professional Bull Riders) card and go pro.  With Jake’s determination, we might be watching him on television competing in the Ford Tough Series!

Filed under: Community News,Parents,Staff,Students — Mr. Beckeman @ 12:25 pm

Taylor Young, a 2009 graduate of R-PHS has kept her green and white colors from her cheering days at R-PHS but now has different letters on her uniform.

Taylor now cheers for Michigan State University!  She recently cheered the Spartan football team to victory over Northwestern and the Spartan Volleyball team as they competed against arch-rival Michigan.

Fall Into A Good Book

Mrs. Vincent, LMC specialist at the high school,  is offering the “Fall Into A Good Book” reading incentive program for our high school students.

The attached flyer will provide you with more information on this pleasure reading incentive program.

Fall Into a Good Book Flyer

I asked Mrs. Vincent to share her inspiration behind her creation of “Fall Into A Good Book” incentive program and this is what she said: “The LMC takes seriously its role in promoting life-long reading habits.  Helping students find the book that hooks them, is one of my greatest pleasures.  The “Fall Into A Good Book” reading promotion is meant to encourage students to take time to read for pleasure and enjoyment.  Reading is a past-time that you never outgrow, and a hobby you can take with you anywhere.”

We’re fortunate to have Mrs. Vincent serving R-PHS students in her role as LMC specialist!

State Budget Proration

The state budget director, Mr. Robert L. Emerson, sent a memo out dated October 22, 2009 informing all public schools of an additional revenue shortfall to the State School Aid Fund in the amount of $212 million.

This shortfall is in addition to the current $165.oo prorated cut to the 2009-10 school budgets across the state.

What does this mean to R-P Schools?  The proration will call for a $1.15 million cut to this year’s budget.  The letter from Mr. Emerson is attached:

Budget Proration

Through the leadership of our superintendent, Mr. Stephen Cousins, our district will involve all stakeholder groups in taking  on the challenge of making necessary budget adjustments that match the proration.
